Get the Look: Michelle Obama

November 6, 2008

Congratulations to the new first family! Upon moving into the White House on January 20, 2009, Michelle Obama not only brings her history-making husband, two beautiful girls, and new pet (please go for the pound dog, not the breeder’s pup) but also her seemingly effortless good taste and style.

Hello new First Family, the Obamas!

Michelle Obama always looks sharp, whether she’s wearing a J. Crew outfit on The Tonight Show or a Narciso Rodriguez dress on Election Day night. And the right jewelry—of course—compliments all of her ensembles.

A Narciso Rodriguez dress from his fall 2009 collection.

Does Michelle’s dress look familiar? Of course, it’s the same Narciso Rodriguez garment from the runway.

Colorful brooches played a role in her outfits at the Democratic National Convention and on late-night TV, multiple strands of pearls were evident on the campaign trail, and finally, diamonds took the spotlight on Election Day night. If you like what you see, then let Michelle Obama’s fashion sense inspire your own interpretation (suggestions below).

The press reported that her turquoise pin, worn during the Democratic National Convention, is her own and not a loaner.

And what’s better than diamonds to celebrate a big night? Answer: more diamonds. Thus, Mrs. Obama dons oversize diamond drop earrings and bangle bracelets on Election Day night.

This lady loves jewelry--and we love this lady! Have to admit,
though, I wasn't loving the Narciso Rodriguez dress so much.
Michelle Obama has both a really good individual fashion sense and
good taste about what works for her body and is appropriate for an
occasion, and while I'm sure the dress looks great in person, red's
a really tough color to pull off on camera. Also, readers, note
that Michelle's version of the Rodriguez dress was several inches
longer than the one shown on the runway, and she added a cardigan
sweater. That's how your customers will personalize trends, too.
Also, readers, lest anyone have missed Jen's point that these
pieces shown here are "suggestions," she's offering ideas to source
pieces that are similar to what Michelle Obama is wearing, not
implying these all are pieces she actually wore. Finally, to Jen's
point about the pup, I agree: I hope they do adopt from a shelter,
rather than go to a breeder. Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell and
his wife Midge adopted a golden retriever rescued from a puppy
mill--she joins the family's existing golden in living the pampered
life at the Governor's Mansion in Harrisburg, so hopefully another
shelter dog will also win the doggy lottery and end up a pampered
pooch on Pennsylvania Avenue!
