Spotlight: Girlshop

December 1, 2006

Last night off the beaten cobblestone paths of NYC’s hip Meatpacking District, Girlshop boutique was host to After Hours shopping and champagne. The fashion-forward and gracious staff was on hand offering style tips and picks, as were jewelry designer Makeda Garvey of Makeda Jewelry Design and a rep from Lisa Levine jewelry.

Garvey’s pieces feel deeply connected with the earth because of her metal finishes and gemstone selections and cuts. Standouts included chunky but thin hammered hoop earrings in both copper and patina bronze, and a tassel necklace with amethyst and black onyx . Though she doesn’t have a Web site, New Yorkers can check out Makeda at Girlshop and in Soho on Prince and Mercer streets.

Lisa Levine’s designs are organic, edgy, and delicate all at once. But it’s her linear command that had me coveting every piece, including gently arcing bow earrings, woven silk and chain necklaces, drippy threadlike necklaces, and Pat Benataresque feather earrings. In addition to Girlshop, Levine’s wares can be found at her shop in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Avenue.

Also present was designer Deepa Gurnani, who showcased precious and precisely beaded scarves and belts. Gurnani shares her handiwork with women in India to instill a sense of worth while giving the gift of independence.

Sponsored by bubbly king Moët & Chandon, the mantra of the night was “be fabulous.” And how.

Sounds like a great event, Toni, and I love the jewelry- the Cross
My Heart necklace in particular.
