Photo Find: The Sexiest Use of Figural Brooches Ever

April 29, 2009

From time to time, I come across a photo of an individual styled so beautifully with jewelry that the photo deserves comment and another admiring look.

Figural brooches, pins designed to look like animals or objects, often provide an indication of the wearer’s hobbies or interests seen, for example, in a brooch shaped like a tennis racket, a grand piano or a poodle. As a precious representation of something dear to the wearer, a figural pin can be among the favorite jewels of a jewelry aficionado.

Some figurals carry connotations of character traits attributable to an animal or symbolism represented by an object.  Former United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, of course, is a well-known champion of using brooches to convey messages by her choice of motif, whether a snake, an eagle or a dove.

At other times, a figural brooch is selected by the wearer and delights the viewer just by virtue of the beauty of the design. I’ve seen many a life-sized butterfly or bee perched on a shoulder, sleeve or hat to charming effect.

A wonderfully creative trio of figural diamond brooches provides an eye-catching accent on a stunning red gown worn by Ivana Trump in the May 4, 2009 issue of People magazine. The brooches depict three generously sized spiders crawling up the bodice of her dress. Spiders on the elegant gown of a beautiful woman – proving just how mischievous and sexy brooches can be.

You are so right! It is a witty and naughty statement that suggests personality. I saw the picture in People, but didn't notice what you 'saw.' Thanks!
