Trend Watch: Waisted at the 2009 Golden Globes

January 19, 2009

While extraordinary necklaces, dazzling bracelets and the usual panoply of sparkling earrings of all shapes and sizes were in abundance at this year’s Golden Globes, another trend was worn in a most attractive and interesting way by the woman of the evening, the most winning Kate Winslet.

Winslet wore a spectacular bracelet of five rows containing 47 carats of diamonds as well as diamond earrings by Chopard, but it was the jewels at her waist of her black Yves St. Laurent gown that have quite captured my fancy. The waistline of her gown was accented with an exquisite diamond pendant brooch, reportedly also by Chopard. This detail at the waist presents an exciting, adaptable style.

At this year’s Golden Globes, adornment at the waist was an important trend. Heidi Klum, who has her finger on the pulse of fashion, captured the trend toward adornment at the waist with an enormous red posy. Laura Linney’s gown, with its sparkling midsection, epitomized a focus on an hourglass shape. Miss Golden Globe 2009, Rumer Willis, wore a gown with what appears to be an embroidered design of glittering silver at her waist.

A diamond Van Cleef & Arpels brooch accentuated the waist of Olivia Wilde in her gown of lavender by Reem Acra. Her brooch were pinned at front center, almost like a replacement for a belt buckle. Jane Krakowski wore a dress with what appears to be a diamond brooch peeping out at waist level from under a sweeping design detail of her one-shouldered gown.

Kate Winslet’s pendant brooch, however, took the look of an adorned waist to a new level. Rather, than a static brooch in line with the waistband, the diamonds hung off her belt to the side of center like a charm. Charming! The scale of the brooch was beautifully in line with the scale of her features, an example of exceptional styling.

Several actresses, such as Kyra Sedgwick, wore gowns with plain belts matching their dresses that might have been made more interesting by the substitution of a jeweled adornment. And wouldn’t January Jones have dazzled even more with a diamond brooch to accentuate her retro glamorous style?
