Sotheby’s: BIG Round Brilliant Brings $16.19 Million!

November 14, 2007

Big round brilliants are usually considered to be headlights. Not a flattering description for a big diamond. That’s why most large diamonds, anything over 20 carats, is typically a fancy shape, regardless of the original shape of the rough.

However, leave it to some diamond cutter to buck the trend. The big round brilliant, an 84.37-carat D color Flawless (not Internally Flawless) Triple Ex (Excellent Polish, Symmetry, and Cut) graded by GIA’s Gem Lab has just sold at Sotheby’s in Geneva for a whopping deer-in-diamond-headlight $16,189,769, which includes the buyer’s premium, to Guess clothing company founder Georges Marciano.

D Flawless Triple Ex – this stone has to be absolutely magnificent!

For more from the wire, read here. And don’t you hate it when they call a "D" color diamond "White?" (Like here, and here.) A white diamond is milk colored white! A "D" color diamond is Colorless! Gee whiz!
