Window Shopping: New York City

December 20, 2007

Offices in New York City are great for a number of reasons: sample sales, the opportunity to interact with a large portion of the American jewelry industry, and, the occasion to see many unique and innovative retailers, their window displays, and advertisements. The latter two are the reasons for this post.

Here are a few cool visuals–two window displays and one ad–seen recently in the Big Apple. Only one is from a jeweler, but all are very creative and appropriate for their categories. Be inspired!

Ernest Klein & Company International Supermarket at 55th & 6th Avenues.

The name of this store alone would draw me in; I only have Acme and Genuardi markets in my town. The food in an "International" market has to taste better, or at least, more glamorous.

The clustered bottles utilize one of the store’s products in a simple way that really commands attention. A flat-screen TV in the center is also a pretty neat idea.

This display also utilizes the power of suggestion: "That’s right, I do need a dozen bottles!"

Burgundy Wine Company on 26th  between 7th and 6th Avenues.

This place is conveniently located on my route to the office.

Colorful tissue paper wrapped around bottles of wine is another simple, inexpensive, and easy-to-do display that gets noticed.

Of course, wine stores don’t really need to do much to call attention to themselves–who hasn’t been to a wine store lately? (Or, today?) Still, this effort is appreciated.

You know, I can’t answer that question either.

A Tiffany & Co. advertisement at a bus stop at 30th and 5th Avenues.

So "cool," and so very clever and appropriate for the retailer. It’s simple, and gets a message across quickly and easily: "Buy jewelry this holiday season." Or, stick around Frosty and borrow his when he melts.
