Diamond Media Watch

November 29, 2006

- From the LA Times' "All Blood Diamond All the Time" blog (meaning, it's just like this one): "Blood Diamond" to air on Oprah Dec. 4, this Monday. I plan to "live-blog" it — meaning I'll watch it and give my thoughts as it happens.

- A major story just came out on the Sierra Leone diamond industry in Fortune. Having been to Sierra Leone, I can tell you, it's not pretty, but it's all true. (By the way, more information on the Diamond Development Initiative can be found here.)

Went to see the movie for the 2nd time. it got me even more than
the first time. Q&A with the cast after. Di Caprio got drunk
with the mercenaries while prepping for the movie and get
information about the conflict(s). Djimon, who's from Benin went
home to see his family and talked about what he used to see when
going back to his country to visit his family, having to go across
the countries in war. Jennifer C was quite quiet, wearing a HUUUGE
pair of dia earrings, which were sparkling in the lights on
stage..i forgot to ask her if she asked for a non conflict
certification for them. She spoke about Amnesty Int'l whos got a
program for teachers and they have a link on their web site about
Conflict Diamonds. The cast & Crew set up a found which was
matched 100% by the studio to promote awareness and help the
population of Mozambique …better than nothing.. it was an
interesting evening , di caprio is extremely adamant about this
whole conflict diamonds thing.. VERY VERY. Interesting note: he
said he met with one of consultant of the movie a journalist that
did a documentary, digital camera under his sleeve, he went
undercover as a member of the rebels and apparently the footage of
that documentary is absolutely unbelievable, showing the real REAL
truth. Did not say where or if it is possible to see it anywhere.
the movie opens Friday the 8th and Captain Poison is in town (David
had a blast apparently playing that role..).
