We may be in a recession, but many folks still hang on tight to their favorite vices. This news is courtesy of the lunchtime report “Steamy Stimulus” on Street Signs with Erin Burnett which aired today on CNBC TV.
The broadcast included an interview with Barnes & Noble, which claims that sales of romance novels are up (Harlequin reports increased year-over-year sales of 38 percent), and Trader Joes, whose “Two Buck Chuck”—a name given to the grocer’s low-cost and tasty Charles Shaw wines—is unaffected by the recession.

Other fun facts included four-week high figures for the following companies, all purveyors of transgressions of some form:
- Smith & Wesson up 38%
- Brunswick (billiards, boats) up 47 %
- Krispy Kreme up 56%
- Harley Davidson up 60%
- Ricks Cabaret (gentlemen’s clubs) up 75%
Good grief! It seems that Americans just can’t do without their guns, girls, and doughnuts in time of crisis.
