Happy New Year! What topics of interest and articles would you, the retail jeweler, like JCK to write about in the 2009? Please be specific, such as ‘sales tips for moving old merchandise’, and, suggest ideas that will help you better run your business, not necessarily profiles of specific firms. Also tell us what articles from previous issues of JCK and JCK Luxury were useful to you and why. Thanks, and I wish everyone success in the months ahead.

Thanks, Fred and Delia. To your points, please check out our newest
blog, Memo to Merchandisers, by Dr. Tim Malone, a former professor
at GIA's School of Business. He's addressing many of the points
you're asking about, though I'm not sure about the family business
one. There are, however, some excellent resources for family
businesses; one of which is Family Business magazine, edited by
JCK's former managing editor Barbara Spector. Check it out!

Fred, thank you for weighing in (you, too, Delia!). Do you read JCK
and JCK Luxury, both of our books?

I could care less about any announcement of who the next official
is of some major firm - it is a waste of my cyper time to display
that in every newsletter. Rather to send key issues that impact
upon increasing sales in local markets and decreasing expenses -
which equal to a better life and income.

--How a family business can deal with an older generation who keeps
"working" long after he/she should have moved on --How to deal with
(non-family) longtime employees whose job performance is slipping
due to aging --What percentage of annual sales should be spent on
payroll? On owner's compensation? Advertising? How regular--not
multi-million--stores have found ways to update their: lighting; or
window displays; or in case displays; or a budget redecorating that
shows how a store can get a facelift for, say $1000 or $2000--and
how to plan for the next step of such an update. (For example, if a
store repaints trim one year, and plans to replace carpet the next,
etc. ) Internships--have any jewelry businesses co-opted with
colleges or trade schools and how did it work out. Paid or unpaid?
How much time did it require on the part of the owner? How a
business has made a a major change in order to gain more family
time for the owner
