Ok, This Is Clever!
When Cabela’s, the mammoth hunting/fishing/outdoor gear retailtainment store opened its first outpost east of the Mississsippi, it (not surprisingly) chose to do it in Pennsylvania. Why PA? Well, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh notwithstanding, this is serious outdoor territory–I mean, c’mon, where else is the first day of buck season going to be a school holiday?
So when Murphy Jewelers of Pottsville, Pa. decided to expand, owners Pat and Kim Murphy figured the best place to do it was somewhere that would get LOTS of traffic. And so they chose Hamburg, Pa., across the intersection from Cabela’s.
Seem a little odd to pair a jewelry store with a hunting store? Not so fast.

Cabela’s turned the intersection of PA Route 61 and Interstate 78 from one of many nondescript junctions of highway to a mecca for hunters of all kinds, as evidenced by Murphy’s billboard on Route 61 northbound, to make sure everyone knows where they’re supposed to shop. And an added bonus, Murphy’s shoppers don’t have to get up at dawn, sit in a damp woods, or spray deer scent over themselves.
Deer scent? You really don’t want to know.

To CB Foshee: Great idea! I'm betting that Pat and Kim Murphy have
the hot drinks covered. Kim makes great boilo (another local
tradition) and most of their vendors demand that she have some
waiting when they get there. As for the deer pheromone, I would
love it if they had deer repellant instead. I already cross my
fingers and pray I don't hit one while driving!

It's brilliant! This way, those who want the sporting goods have
Cabela's, which, if you are into the outdoors, I do highly
recommend-excellent clothes and equipment and a good online store,
too-they take orders on the phone 24 hours a day!-and those who
wish to look at jewelry have the perfect time to do so, and
everyone is happy! Literally, things for everyone in the family,
and friends too! What would really enhance the atmosphere of the
jewelry store is if they served hot drinks in the wintertime, like
hot cider, cocoa, and coffee, and cold drinks in the summer! As for
the deer scent, well, if you really want to know, call Cabela's-
they might send you a tiny sample, just so you can see (smell) for
yourself what it's all about. Basically it is deer pheromones!
Cheers, CB Foshee

The real secret is to actually spray your hunting buddy with the

to the daily doses of "grim & gruesome" from Katie, Tom and
Charlie on the evening news. After all, are we not selling the very
antidote to "grim & gruesome"?
