Shake-up at Helzberg

June 29, 2009

So .. we hear there has been a bit of a shake-up at the Helzberg merchandising team now that Beryl Raff has taken over as CEO

Four or so key merchandisers have either retired or left, including people long associated with the chain like John Doerty and Oliver Keene.

Outsiders are not sure which way the company is headed. Bringing in Beryl Raff would seem to indicate the company is going in a more promotional direction. However, one of her new hires is from Bailey, Banks and Biddle and Movado Boutiques, which would seem to indicate the opposite.

The mood internally is described as "nervous," which is natural when there are a lot of changes (and certainly describes a lot of places these days.)   The abrupt replacement of Marvin Beasley as CEO shook up a lot of people, since it’s rare for the Buffett organization to make a dramatic change like that, as well as promote from outside.

Dear "in the know", glad the home office area appears strong for you and others close to the base. I know it is not that way out in other area's. My big question for you and all of Helberg-can i count enough on employment at Helzberg to buy a home ??? I don't know that many could out of kansas city and in the field. They "will" pay you well, but only short term. After that, you must worry about your short term employment. How long have you worked in K.C. ???

actually, turnover is lower than industry standard, both in the field, and in the main office. of course, turnover in the field is higher than in the main office... that if common to all retail. i am in the kansas city area, so know folks in both the stores & office.

I have worked with Oliver Keene. He is a true gentleman and he will be missed at Helzbergs. I wish him the best.

i can't believe that you cannot see the turnover "in the field" "IN THE KNOW!!!". the buying offices did appear to be stable. but, i guess, not now....where are you from??? from st. louis in the late seventies to colorado to atlanta to florida many years ago until today. there are not many people are left just a year or two later after employed, check their "to the curb program." only office people have been safe until they cut them from three to one. again, where are you from??? and that's great for you. great continued employmemt to you!!!! now and forever!!!

Makes you wonder if the next shake-up will be at JCP when Raff starts recruiting her favorites.

On the contrary, pauncho, Helzberg has one on the lowest turnover rates in the industry. Typical tenure around here is counted by decades.

It would be nice to new merchandise - just because you've been in a job for a long time does not mean you do it well! There hasn't been enough turn around or accountability in merchandising.

Turnover remains the style of this company, with or without Raff. it has been that way for decades.
