Interview with Henry Dunay: "We'll Come Back"

June 24, 2009

Legendary jewelry designer Henry Dunay just spoke to me about his company’s Chapter 11 filing Monday.  He was obviously not happy about the situation, but also resolute, vowing his company would come out of Chapter 11.

“We are going to reorganize the company and go forward,” he said. “We are going to be back and better than ever. I am sure of it.”

His immediate hope is to get new investors in the company, and he said he is in talks to do that.

As for his current problems, the main one was, of course, the drop in demand. Dunay said his sales were off some 60 – 65%.

“We just hit a wall with nobody buying and nobody paying us,” he says.

But he said that was exacerbated by the industry’s reliance on memo.

“Memo is one of the main reasons I had to do this,” he said. “I don’t mind if somebody calls me and says I have a customer looking for something special. But when it sits in the store for a few months just to fill in the window, that is killer.”

For now he vows to carry on as usual.

“I will still make new pieces,” he said. “This has been 50 years of putting my life into this. I am not a golfer. I am not a tennis player. I make jewelry.”

Indeed he does. And we wish him a speedy resolution to his current woes.

[By the way, I’ve had a lot of requests for a creditor list. None has been made public yet. But I will disseminate it when it comes out.]

The industry as a whole is going through very difficult times... but I have sold inepieces of jewelry for over 20 years.... his materials are fine and the workmanship fine as well.... but please.... some of the most outrageously overpriced jewelry I have ever handled... and by his own voice..."diamonds in our pieces are D Flawless...but you may not want to say this to your customers"....??? and to compare him to some true designers.... is a joke.... as well as they fact that he is arrogant and snotty..... he once asked me... you sell more jewelry than anyone in the country for your company... why dont you ever sell my pieces... and I told him it was because I enjoy sleeping at night... and feel guilty to sell your pieces due to how overpriced they are.... sorry but the truth.... as mentioned above Paul Flato, Renee Boivin, Schepps, antique Cartier, older Heyman, Fouquet etc...... those are designers those are jewelers.... : )

In reply to "Joe" (see above),have you ever heard the phrase "NOT FDIC INSURED"? If you are so dim witted with your investments than quit the business and go sell rugs. You don't deserve to get paid, you are a swine flu parasite who attaches itself to a host (brilliant designer) and sucks all life out of it. ... Message edited by Moderator. Be civil, please.

May Henry Dunay's return be received warmly and enthusiatically. Among the pioneers in design, however, I have to ask; what year did Jose Hess start creating jewelry?

I first met Henry back in the 1970's he was working on the bench making some new jewelery designs in NYC. I was impressed then and have always been till this day, with his limited edtion designs and art sculptures. I always viewed his collections at the trade shows and felt so impressed with most of them. I know they would be historical collector items now and in the future. I am very glad that he can restart again, it will be very good for the industry and collectors.I wish him well!

I respect this legendary jewelry designer for their talent but can’t understand? All this companys are in business since long time, They must have made some money When the time was good?. Why only the economy was to blame for their bankruptcy filing? There sales are down only in last two year? And they have to file chapter? What about the money they made? All gone too; I guess all in expenses?

Lorraine DePasque, Jewelry Writer and Ed commented:

FYI: For any who do not know, Henry Dunay has been referred to as the "Father of the American School of Jewelry Design," as he was a pioneer in the states by putting his name on his jewelry back in 1967. For such vision and courage alone, we, as an industry, should be grateful to this man and I, personally, wish him well.

Luis de Agustin commented:

It sends shivers down your spine when the Henry Dunay company is forced to seek protection. Regardless of any imperfection in the handling of the firm that may have added to the wows from a shambles economy, this is indeed terrible news that forebodes a distant recovery. All should wish best of luck to a man of vision and art who represents the finest of an industry. Luis de Agustin
