Diamond Shavings: Your Friday Web Roundup

August 31, 2007

I should mention that I will be visiting synth- – I mean lab-grown – diamond manufacturer Gemesis next week. If you have any questions for them, post them below or send them to: rbates at reedbusiness.com.  I am going to try to blog from over there as well.

And now the news …

US market at risk. Perhaps because of articles like this.  India optimistic.

Financial results:

Zale full year: Profits up, sales down. Good analysis. I heard the webcast – apparently “Journey” is hoped to be a big seller at Christmas, where comp sales are projected to rise 1 – 2%. Sales at Bailey’s, zales.com and outlet all up. CEO unenthusiastic about any merger with Sterling. (UPDATE: Thoughts from Motley Fool.)

Tiffany’s 2nd quarter: sales up 19% (!), profits down ‘cause of Little Switzerland sale. Analysts impressed.

LKI full year: Sales down, loss posted. But they have cool ice cream cone.

Finlay 2nd quarter: Comp sales down, loss posted.

Chaim on India’s import duty.

Good coverage from Israel of Moshe Schnitzer memorial service.

Lab-grown manufacturer Gemesis to expand.

World Biggest Diamond? Or world’s biggest crock?  Its spokesman talks to JCK.

- Commentary.

Miningmx: Diamond juniors on the rise.

Media Watch: Bloomberg/Herald Tribune: Diamond business “looks good.”

In Australia, consumers don’t trust their jewelers.

De Beers retail chain to open in Russia.

Manhattan Gold and Silver sues Brooklyn DA.

Rick Cohen (formerly of Fabrikant) joins Robbins Brothers.

Second diamond factory in Angola.

My space launches fashion community.

Damien Hirst skull sold.

De Beers (the retailer) to open in Moscow.

Diamonds may have use in artificial joints.

Condoleeza Rice not so diplomatic in jewelry stores.

From the blog:

Diamonds and the Ivory Coast.

Have a great Labor Day weekend everyone …
