Diamond Shavings: Your Friday Web Roundup

July 13, 2007

First, some trade press news: Long-time Modern Jeweler writer David Federman is leaving to become the editor of Colored Stone.  Best of luck to the Dean!

And now the news …

- Gassman/Idex: U.S. diamond sales boom! But overall retail sales in June not great.

- De Beers Restructuring, Part 11: Marketing and mining functions split.  I am still trying to get info on this, particularly what it will mean for U.S. marketing; for now, spokeswoman Lynette Gould says it will be “business as usual.”  Apparently, there is a big meeting over the current week to plan strategy.

- De Beers and Alrosa: Reunited? Will it feel so good?

-         Media reports. Anglo’s stock up!

-         Commentary from Chaim, Solitare, Wyndham, Mineweb, Business Day and myself (here and here.)

- Surat diamond industry losing employees.

- Foreign companies have trouble entering South African jewelry business.

Media Watch:
-Newsweek (International) on fancy colored diamonds.

- Woman’s Wear Daily on synthetic/lab-grown. (Subscription required; email me if you want a copy.)

- Liz Smith: Diamond business “healthy” despite movie. (Second item.) Also, something on Charlie Sheen’s diamond.

- The South African press on Rapaport and Fair Trade jewelry.

- Diamond switcher on West Coast. Graff robbed.

- John Hardy sells brand.

- Stock picker likes moissanite: “My social activist friends were constantly criticizing me for wearing diamonds.” She likes the fact that moissanite’s manufacturer has a “monopolistic position.” Isn’t that what people criticize De Beers for?

- Botswana goes Hollywood!

From the Blog:

- Will De Beers Rise Again?

- E.C. Does It?.

Enjoy your weekend …
