Diamond magnate Lev Leviev, who certainly doesn't feel "cartel nostalgia," has become a major force in real estate in New York City, but he's done it in a very slow, under-the-radar way. But his profile is likely to become far higher with his recent purchase of the New York Times building. He also has purchased the famed Upper West Side Building the Apthorp. (Maybe the publicity will help his retail chain.)
