Phony Discounting Lives!

December 29, 2008

With all the news media discussion about the great deals this holiday, it’s worth noting that there is still a little hype involved.

Here is a story on Consumerist,  which first aired on a local TV station (video), about a woman who bought a piece of jewelry "on sale" at Kohl’s. However, when she peeled back a price tag on a $360 item, she found an old price tag for $290. So the "sale price" was higher than the regular … (Kohl’s says it’s looking into the situation.)

The comments on Consumerist on this are interesting … particularly this one: "[At m]ost jewelry store counters at department stores, it is impossible to even buy jewelry at the original price. It’s ALWAYS on sale for at least 50% off."

Very true, and it’s probably going to get worse …

Here we go again! The early '80s are back. I saw sale signs back then with 90% discounts. Must we now become liars to survive?

I work in the fine jlry dept. of a major dept. store...the consumer has been trained to only shop on days on sale and now they actually complain when the sales are only 50 less 20 less 10. There is no pricing integrity any longer and every day, the distrust of retailers grow

I've been ranting about this for years. No wonder people equate jewelry with used cars! There's nothing special about something that's always 50% off.
