Vegas Flying Tip

May 25, 2007

Last year my parents and I were flying back from the Tucson show and some guy recognized my dad—well he’s not hard to miss…he’s one of the few guys wearing a turban (a garment meant to cover the hair for religious reasons in relation to Sikhism). He remembered my dad from his wholesaling days. Anyways, he began to talk about the industry and sure enough when we all got off the plane—our luggage was “missing in action” and so was his.

Dos and Donts on the way to Vegas

Don’t

Do

Pull out the list of exhibitors aboard the plane

Make your list at home before you leave or in the hotel the night before like most procrastinators

Wear all your fancy smancy jewelry on board

Put it in your purse and then put it on once you get to the hotel or if you have too—wear simple pieces, better yet white gold pieces so the consumers next to you can mistake it for sterling silver. (Don’t worry we all know its real)

Talk about the JCK show so loud that the passenger at the back of the plane knows the entire purpose of your trip

Listen to an IPOD, Zune, read a book, sleep, or bother your husband while he sleeps

Keep counting dollars and cents that you should or shouldn’t spend whether it be on inventory or the poker table

Travel safe, enjoy your trip, have fun, and if you do overspend on gambling or inventory you’ll just have to toughen up on the staff and get them to sell more

Add to the list: don't save your trade mags for airplane
reading--including JCK. Or, if you absolutely must, then fall back
on the old fourth-grade comic-book-inside-your-spelling-workbook
trick and put your JCK inside any well-known newsstand publication
that won't arouse suspicion. Don't tell people where you're going,
or if you have to tell someone, call it an "accessories" show.
You're not really lying, after all... Don't pack valuables in your
checked bags and don't leave your carryon bags unattended at any
time. Ladies, put your jewelry in your purse as Shanu suggests, but
put it deep, deep inside, preferably in a zipped compartment and
put your purse on the security belt last before you go through the
metal detector, so that you're waiting to retrieve it as soon as it
comes out the other side. Happy travels!
