Friday at Couture: Scott Kay is NOW Distributing Edward Mirell

May 29, 2009

To be able to book a Couture appointment two weeks before the show is astonishing to me. I did not know the number of days I would be attending the shows; so of course, I waited until the last minute to make some appointments. The show was terribly slow but it was only the second day in.

My first appointment was 10am this morning with Scott Kay. Surprisingly enough he did have some new bridal pieces—because of the way things are going I figured not many vendors would be showcasing new merchandise. He also introduced a new sterling line/designed pieces called “Faith.” In addition, while pursuing the cases I saw men’s black titanium rings which looked extremely similar to the ones I have by Edward Mirell. I opened the case and noticed right away this was Edward Mirell’s Tuxedo Style Ring (who has patent on black titanium from what I know.) The men’s bands were on Scott Kay displays and the case read SK-Cobalt. I come to find out Scott Kay has introduced using cobalt for men’s bands (lightweight and price point pieces) in addition Scott Kay will be the sole distributor of the black titanium (that’s what I heard). I started to ask my rep the prices—unfortunately I didn’t have the prices on me but all I could hope was that I wasn’t going to have to pay $10-$15 bucks more for the ring because Scott Kay is now distributing the line.

I’m assuming because Scott Kay is already in so many doors this is a great way for Edward Mirell to expand their line. I did overhear that SK-Cobalt does have a buy-in. I told my rep when I purchased the Edward Mirell black titanium line (I forget what it’s called but it had many designs a part of it) I had buy-in then and should not have to rebuy-into the program if I already own many of the pieces. He told me he’d get back to me on that one. My rep told me this had become effective very recently and many of the details have not been hashed out.

Does anyone know if we can only buy the pieces from Scott Kay now? Is Edward Mirell also distributing the pieces? Once again—I didn’t find this out from Edward Mirell but instead another company. Will Edward Mirell be handling the customer service on these rings or Scott Kay? So many unanswered questions….

Thought I'd all let you know there are other vendors distributing
Edward Mirell as well such as Crown Rings. The rings have the black
titanium but are each are tweaked a tiny bit--some the black
titanium part is wider some a little smaller but it's defintely
Edward Mirell.

I'm a blogger and a retailer! I didn't know all the facts and
stated that clearly. Scott Kay is very honest and open but was busy
talking about his new sterling collection and I was there for the
show and plan to find out about this but thought I'd let you all in
on a little information before all the facts come out. By the
way--this information should have come from Edward Mirell not Scott
Kay since he has the patent on black titanium. PS-Questions get
everyone talking, sharing, and hopefully some are open about their
identitiy. Our industry lacks much of this. Thank you for the
information.

Get Your Facts Straight commented:

Of course Scott Kay always has killer "buzz" but writers should be
answering questions not asking them to readers. You assume? Are you
kidding me? Why not make an appointment with Scott Kay himself and
get the facts? Are you reporter or a gossiper? I myself had
questions on this very topic and I marched up to Mr. Scott Kay and
got some answers on the spot. The man doesn't hide from people!! He
told me he will be revealing the SKCobalt (not a company but an
exclusive branded metal alloy mixture name) and SKCobalt facts
within 2 weeks (and I'm a retailer - NOT a paid writer). Stop
asking your readers and ask the source and maybe, just maybe,
people will take you seriously. I highly suggest anyone with
SKCobalt questions visit the Scott Kay booth in the LaTache
ballroom in the Wynn, where he or someone on his staff should
answer questions like he did for me. Maybe I will start a column
and starting giving information rather than asking it.
