Garage Sale for Jewelers
I started learning about safes yesterday. I called some insurance companies for their advice on which type of safe will lower my premium and to my surprise, as long as the safe wasn’t burglarized or drilled the insurance company didn’t care if I bought it used. Their basic requirements were a TL30X6 (this is new to me…TL30X6=tool resistant for 30 minutes on all 6 sides). So, I started calling around for a used safe yet most of the local companies in Charlotte sold new safes.
The light bulb went off…I started to wish for a network of jewelers who were leaving the industry who could help new jewelers who were entering the business. When you retire what are you going to do with your old safes, microscopes, the steamer, etc? Instead of piling it up in your garage…why not, help the “new bees” coming into the industry or people like me who are expanding their business?
If you don’t have something to sell you can share a company that gave you a great deal or one's products you love:
- Microscope
- Steamer
- Ultrasonic
- Safes (Ones I’ve been referred to are: Worldwide Safe & Vault, Empire Safe, Downs Safe & Lock)
- Insurance (Wexler Insurance, Jeweler’s Mutual, Chubb Insurance)
- Lighting (or maybe you want to tell about the best bulbs to make those diamonds sparkle even more)
- Light Box
- Maybe a Web Designer
- Audio System…I hear Muzak does a lot of strip centers
- Financing (so to be able to have your own credit card for your store—GE Private Label Program)
- Gift Cards
- Displays
- Boxes with your Logo or Embossed Ribbon
I’ll get the ball rolling with something I saw in my Local Flyer: Microscope–AO Scientific Instrument 150/110 like new $500 call 704-542-3242

I think that this is a great idea. I have a great safe for sale. It
is a John Tann, very large 81" tall, will get over 3 million $$ of
insurance coverage from the insurance companies. I closed one
store, have one left and an extra safe. Never been drilled has
combo/key for entry. Call Mark at 954-424-2120

No jeweler simply retires and rides into the sunset. Our profession
lasts a lifetime and a half. Once we have established ourselves as
jewelers our former customers and relatives always assume that we
have not really retired. As long as we are capable of being in the
upright position we can accomodate an old friend. I tell friends to
go to the man that bought my retail store 5 years ago, and they
tell me, " but I know you for over 30 years and will not trust
anyone else with grandpa's pocket watch for a watch crystal". Some
of us have children who have entered the jewelry business. They
have adopted our equipment. Others like to have a piece of
equipment on their coffee table to remind themselves of
grandpa/grandma's being a jewelry merchant and still others have
found themselves in the position of wanting to sell the equipment
but not knowing for how much, so it sits. Place an ad and make an
offer of what you will pay, rather than waiting. Uncle Marty

I am setting up an appraisal business in the NYC area. The thing I
need most is the traveling lab. I have a lovely older microscope
but would love to get one that gradually goes upto 60X or even 45X.
If anyone out there would be interested in trading my skills for
equiptment that would be even better for my cash flow. Please
e-mail me SORitc@aol.com Thanks, Sara
