Every Thought of Using USPS Instead of FedEx or UPS?
July 27, 2008
I am a huge USPS fan. My commercial insurance policy (Jeweler’s Mutual) includes free coverage of packages insured up to $25,000 sent per day so I figure the cheapest and easiest way to send packages is through the United States Postal Service. Yes…USPS. Some advantages:
- Free Express mail supplies. Boxes, flat rate envelopes, pouches, stickers and more.
- Free carrier pick-up to your jewelry store.
- You can store your business’s address and corporate information online. Pay for the package online, set-up a carrier pick-up, and even order supplies all in one click.
UPS, Fed-Ex, and other shipping companies charge more than the post office. They have a pick-up service, but so does the post office. The old advantage companies like UPS had over the post office, was, a pick-up service.

We use USPS for online shipments under a certain price. You can use
third party insurance with USPS as well. The one biggest reason NOT
to use USPS is that there is NO estimated delivery date, and NO
complete tracking. So if you're shipping to a customer and they are
leaving for a trip in 3 days, you have no way to guarantee their
product will arrive. Then again, when dealing locally, I find that
even a first class letter or parcel with $1.38 postage arrives next
day!
