Your Breath Stinks!
My family loves to eat; in fact we are so obsessive about food that while eating lunch we are discussing what we are going to be eating for dinner. Hell…all the animals in our family are named after food (Oreo, Peppermint, Pepsi, Cheeto, Squirt, Dr. Pepper, and so on). Because we all love to eat—we eat almost everything, especially lots of Indian food that has tons of spices and garlic that definitely has your breath kicking.
Since food is such a big thing in our family—even at the store I get our staff talking about what their going to have for lunch. Personally, I try not to have anything that will have a customer holding their breath and running for the door. If I do eat a bowl of Garlic Chicken and Lo Mein I make sure to have my toothbrush handy and scrub the hell out of my tongue.
No one likes to hear that their breath stinks so how do you tell your staff—your food stinks and so will your breath so you might want to stay away from eating that stuff?
How do you bring up personal hygiene issues with your staff? Do you tell them not to eat in store? Bring a toothbrush to work? What about their nails—do you tell them to get frequent manicures?
Regarding male sales associates…Have you ever sent him home because he came in unshaven?
What do you do when it comes to personal hygiene and your sales associates?

Mention it regularly at staff meetings. Sales people who have been
selling for awhile hear it regularly anyway and know that it is
important. Also, as you hire people, look for extremely neat
appearance. It stands out and sets them apart from the rest. If
someone bothers to take extreme care of themselves, most likely
they will have that down, too, but continue to say something like
"and don't forget the first sales tip, "fresh breath" at
staff/sales meetings.

Easiest way to deal with bad breath--take a Listerine strip for
yourself and offer one to the offender. If they demur, you can say
"no offense meant, but...you had garlic for lunch, yes?"

#1 Rule of management - never bring up any health related issues to
employees who are not offered any health benefits! That is a quick
way to create disgruntled workers. #2 Rule of management - never
tell employees that they have to wear cosmetics (make-up) either
male or female. If management decides that they are judges in a
beauty contest and are complaining about the quality of manicures
then they should provide that service for the employees. I've been
in the industry for more years than I care to admit. Face the facts
- fine jewelry companies are not known for decent benefits or
perks. Most independent companies don't even offer benefits. If
they do - the employees are not able to afford it due to low pay.
Minimum wage in large cities such as in San Francisco is $10 hr. It
would take an employee to work for 2.5 hours just to pay for a
manicure.

A more effective solution would be to keep liquid chlorophyl on
hand to gargle with and to swallow after one of your pungent, odour
forming lunches. It is safe and absolutely effective. Oh, and keep
thinking of delectable names for your pets.
