Oxygen Masks—Random Show News Part II

May 27, 2008

Of course our flight was scheduled for 4:20 pm and didn’t make it in time to Houston so we had to run like a bunch of crazies through the Houston airport to our connecting flight all the way in Concourse E—we were in Concourse A. The worst part wasn’t even having to run and be all sweaty and stinky on the next flight (I had an aisle seat and was sitting next to David so he knows I can smell at times). The worst part is the other crazies on the plane. In the aisle next to me were two men who would not shut up the entire plane ride—3 hours of them talking about work. I couldn’t even hear the movie with my headset on. Men should not be allowed to talk that much and should leave it up to the women. I really never knew men could talk that much because the men in my family are outnumbered by women so I guess we don’t let them do much of the talking even if they wanted too.

Behind the men that wouldn’t shut up was a family—husband, wife, and two kids. One of their children was too young to have his own seat and had to sit on top of mommy. Of course the kid babbled the whole time—trying to make words but it would take another several months before he could utter anything. While mom is talking to baby the safety announcements begin and mom realizes there is only one safety mask above her chair—what happened if the cabin lost pressure? She would only be able to secure babies mask and not hers, so she asked the flight attendant if their were seats with more than one oxygen mask and to my surprise there were so mom, dad, and kids moved seats. My husband and I couldn’t help but giggle and say, “If the plane goes down I think we have bigger problems than the oxygen masks.”

Made it to Vegas alive and have to get up early for appointments at Couture. Enjoy the show.

I have a real issue with children sitting on parents' laps. If
you're not allowed to ride that way in an automobile going 60 mph,
why are you allowed to do it in an airplane going 600 mph? Parents
with children and infants should be required to bring a safety car
seat and attach it to the airplane seat--the separate airplane seat
that they've paid for! As for the loudmouths, I have no compunction
whatsoever about turning around and saying politely, "Excuse me,
but would you please lower your voices a bit? You may not realize
how far your volume carries," and most people if they have any
sense of consideration or manners, will comply. If that and the
Death Ray Stare doesn't work, ask the flight attendant to tell them
to tone down the volume.

Since when is it taboo for two people to have a conversation when
flying? I find it very enjoyable and the typically unpleasant
flying experience goes by much more quickly when I have a pleasant
fellow traveler to shoot the breeze with. The decibel level is so
high on a flight that it is often difficult to even hear the person
next to you. I really doubt you could not hear the movie over the
conversation of two guys across the aisle. It is the screaming and
crying children that annoy me. If conversation of fellow passengers
troubles you so much, may I suggest that you purchase a set of
noise canceling headphones. I use mine when I desire relative quiet
on a flight. Either that or charter a private flight for your
delicate sensibilities. Yes...flying isn't what it once was. Get
used to it or stay home.

Shanu - congrats on not needing those oxygen masks. You could have
offered them yours!
