Diamond Shavings: Your Friday Web Roundup
April 4, 2008

Short self-promotional note … Next week, I will be at the always-interesting American Gem Society Conclave in Seattle … And on Thursday, April 10, from 4:30 to 5:30 PM, I will be giving a talk, entitled “Diamond Update.” If I don’t know you, stop by and say hi …

Now the news …

Friedman’s looks to close stores.

- "Failure to communicate."

Gassman/Idex on Tiffany.

- Reuters on Tiffany’s Wall Street store.

- Tiffany produces Superbowl ring.

Zale names “chief stores officer.”

Finlay reports $10 million loss.

House of Taylor’s sales decline 99%. (!!!)

India “braced for shakeout.”

Behind Canada’s diamond smuggling bust.

De Beers (retail) opens in Dallas.

Wyndham: Rumors Varda's leaving … I should note that there were apparently similar rumors about Gareth a few months back.

India foresees African rough imports.

De Beers mineworkers march.

Behold the diamond thong!  With the quote of the week: “It’s not scratchy or anything.” Good to know!

Media Watch:

- Salon on “beneficiation.”

- FT gives diamond overview.

-Instapundit on buying diamonds online.

- Lehigh newspaper: Did “Blood Diamond” misrepresent Africa?

From the blog:

De Beers vs. Rio.

GIA Responds to Certifigate.

Friedman’s Failure to Communicate.

From JCK:
My story on Fair Trade diamonds.

Enjoy your weekend …

I'm just relieved they're going to dry clean the thong before putting it on display.

Surely hand-washing would be far more appropriate. What if a diamond comes loose from the embroidery? My dry-cleaner busts about one button a load when I give them my shirts. I wouldn't trust a dry cleaner with something like that.
