$400-$1000 is a very hard-fought price point that every single watch company is after right now, with big pushes from Seiko especially. Big market names like Movado, Victorinox, Wittnauer, Accutron, or Longines are well respected. Of course these national/worldwide brands are tapped first by the big companies as they are proven success stories. This makes it a difficult choice for small independents as they don't want to neccesarily have a case that mirrors all four jewelry stores or department stores in their local mall. I would think that a carefully designed private label collection may sell, but it will be much harder to justify the cost. One of the reasons "better" watches are selling right now is because of the brand and prestige recognition (especially with Movado). Personally, I could see a karat gold watch collection easily justifying its price tag (but it might even be too high priced), or perhaps a diamond-heavy collection, or even an automatic/mechanical skeleton-window stainless collection. Taking a look at those two companies you linked to, I was extremely turned off by them, especially Chrono AG (2nd link). Their designs are MUCH too generic and look either exactly like Timex, Seiko, or Fossil...nothing that could be priced at $400 to $1000. The perfect private label line should compliment your existing watch brands, as well as offering something your customers are actively asking/looking for, a style that speaks to them. Coming from department store beginings, I'd suggest considering a designer fashion brand with Swiss-made parts, such as Burberry's Heritage collection (nevermind who the parent company manufacturer is). Hampden Watch in Chicago is an excellent company. I have never sold private label watches, but I have some friends in the industry who do very well with them. They offer their customers lifetime battery changes as an extra closing tool.

A lifetime guarantee for batteries would be an extra perk...as would complimentary repairs for the first __# years. Especially with karat gold timepieces, offering "full trade-in" value for your private label would be another plus. Still, consider this: most major mid-market jewelry chains and department stores dropped their private label watches a while ago, as it was far easier to pour money into Seiko/Citizen/Bulova/Movado's massive Co-Op advertising than to keep diverting sales to their private label.
