Have You Ever Said—I’m a Fashion Consultant…I Advise My Clients on Fashionable Jewelry?

While sitting in a comfy chair, tired from walking the show floors, I couldn’t help but want to close my eyes for just a few seconds—needless to say the seminar I was in wasn’t grabbing my attention, yet I felt bad to walk out while they were speaking.
Suddenly, someone else took the podium and I found my eyes open wide when he asked, “What do you do?” I looked around the room as if he were an idiot—all of us either sell jewelry or own jewelry stores. The speaker says, “Not a good answer.”
I sat there wondering where the heck he was going with this. Then he said, “If you say you sell jewelry you are focusing on the transaction. You should be focusing on the experience you are going to give your clients.”
After putting thought into his statement I started to wonder—When you meet someone in a doctor’s office, the elevator, or in the grocery store and they comment on how beautiful your jewelry is (well of course this happens to all of us everyday—but hold on I’m going somewhere with this) what do you say you do?
Have you ever tried saying I’m a fashion consultant? I advise my clients on fashionable jewelry. Or I’m a jewelry or diamond consultant? Or I’m involved in the most memorable moments of people lives—then follow-up with something about diamonds? I’m an educator of diamonds?
Anyone out there have better titles for what we do other than labeling ourselves as—Jewelry Sales Associates, Diamond Consultants, or Jewelers?
Do you think saying, I sell jewelry focuses on the transaction? How do we beef up our titles? Can we say we are fashion consultants or does that fall into the clothing category and not jewelry?
