Who is the Bathroom Monitor?

Every jewelry store has a bathroom—some even have two. You’re an independent jewelry store owner doing pretty well, but not well enough to hire a cleaning lady or man to come in at the end of every week to tidy up the little boy’s and girl’s room.

When you first started out you remember cleaning it yourself, late when the staff left to go home or early Sunday morning when the store was closed. You’ve come to your senses realizing that not only do you use it, but your sales staff, jeweler, and customers do too.

Are you still cleaning the bathroom? It’s a necessity and a portion of the store that is used and abused a lot. It’s a dirty job that has to be done. So, are you still cleaning your own bathroom? Do your sales associates take turns on a bi-weekly basis? The store gets vacuumed every night and morning, the display cases are wiped down before opening, and the jewelry is taken out of the safe and set-up neatly and precisely in the right showcases…isn’t “bathroom cleaning” a duty that needs to be added to this list?

It is funny as my wife and I were just discussing this issue this morning. Our bathroom is in the shop area, not accessable to the public. Nobody wants to clean the bathroom even though we have an employee scheduled each week. Often they conviently forget to clean it. As a rule I know how bad it looks and do not let customers use it. However the staff thinks nothing about letting a classy highend customer use it. What a terrible impression it can give a customer! Shanu, it good you that you realize how important a well cleaned bathroom is. I hope this was something you learned from working for us. Don

Don and Dorothy-I learned a lot from you two and yes you are right, a well cleaned bathroom is very important. If all the employees use it then all should take turn to clean it.

If you're a service-oriented store (as opposed to a price-oriented store), then having a spotless, beautifully-appointed bathroom that customers can use is a must! And your employees will appreciate it, too. And yes, you can lean on them to clean it--or at the very least, clean up after themselves. With today's vast selection of products that keep the gross factor far away from the hand that cleans, it's not like you're asking them to do a hands-and-knees job anymore.
