Do You Have a Deputy or Officer on Premise?
July 11, 2007
In my last blog I inquired about store owners having guns on the premise—instead what about an off-duty cop? Here in Charlotte, many of the jewelry stores including chain stores have an off-duty cop guarding the store.
For those of you who are considering hiring a sheriff’s deputy or an officer consider the following:
- Call your local sheriff’s office if you’d like to higher an off-duty deputy X amount of days. Keep in mind sheriff’s patrol the whole county.
- You can also call the local police department and ask for an off-duty officer. Police officers are city cops and usually only stay within the city limits.
- Regarding the few counties that I’ve studied it costs approximately $24 per hour for an individual deputy and many counties require a minimum of 3 hours.
- After contacting the sheriffs department and/or your local city police you can set a schedule based on you stores needs. For example, you can have a deputy during opening and closing hours, only on the weekends, or only on holidays. It’s up to you. Some would require you pay the deputy or officer before they leave some will accept if you mail them a check.
Do you have an officer or deputy on premise? Does your staff feel safer with someone guarding the store? Has an officer or deputy deterred crime at your store? Do your customers feel uncomfortable with a cop looking over their shoulder while they’re shopping or does having an officer on premise make them feel safe too?
