Lawyer Talk…Do You Post Your Policies on the Wall Where Everyone Can See?
August 20, 2007
My little brother just started law school—so everything is a discussion with him, though it was even as he was growing up, figures…that’s why he entered law school. He doesn’t know a thing about the business but because he’s a lawyer to be he has got something to say but everything.
Mom, dad and my little brother were visiting last week and we started discussing the stores policies. I decided the store must offer a 30-day return policy because we need to be as competitive with e-commerce retailers whom offer a 30-day no hassle return policy—as do many of my competitors in town. This came up in discussion because I'm having my repair and special order envelopes printed up and I’m also in the process of creating a template for our store’s receipts.
My little brother jumps into the conversation and says, “Where are you putting them up in the store?” My brother is much younger than me so when I talk to him I try and speak his language—“Dude, that’s cheesy and I’m not hanging up our policies on the wall. It’s on the receipt and people sign it before they leave with the merchandise, therefore if they sign it they’ve read our stores policies.” I looked at him as if he was dumb, I probably called him dumb in the conversation and he looked at me as if I were dumb too—brothers and sisters—we love each other so much!
I started to realize I had been to jewelry stores whom display their policies on the wall—some on a plaque, some not so professionally, but nevertheless I've seen it, but I decided I'm not going to post our policies like that—the receipts say it all and they are to be signed by every customer.
Do you openly display your stores policies? Have you ever had an employee forget to have a customer to sign the receipt and then wind up with a problem on your hands because the policies weren’t displayed?
