Headlines that Caught My Attention
August 4, 2007

Tiffany’s for men. I think I skipped over this when I read the magazine the first time. July’s issue of Instore…their source is Idex 6/4/07 states that Tiffany & Co. will open its first men’s store in Tokyo in early September. They say the men’s store will focus exclusively on men’s jewelry and accessories.

My thoughts: Holy crap! You had Lifetime TV for women then came Spike TV (pretty common sense but was too late to cash in on it) for men. Women’s products such as deodorants, perfumes, and lotions are always being advertised, but now more than ever we are seeing commercials formen’s personal care. I feel today there are more metrosexuals than every before—whom are spending money on their images and lifestyles. Are independents behind in this thinking? Have we not captured the men’s market when it was at large? (I actually think it’s at large now)

Do you have an area exclusively for men in your store? Maybe a bar and Plasma behind it that plays ESPN all day—next too it more than a couple of showcases that cater to men and men only…watches, jewelry, and accessories?

De Beers Online. De Beers Diamond Jewelers has launched their ecommerce site. There they sell anything from bridal to high-end diamond fashion jewelry.

My thoughts: When I read about this (I’m sorry with all the trade magazines I read for the life of me I can’t remember where I saw this first) I was shocked. I remember being pissed off when they opened up shop in New York, Beverly Hills, and Vegas and now this. Come on—they are a mining and trading corporation and has historically held a near-total monopoly in the diamond trade—now their going after online buyers too. Many independents want e-retailers to impose taxes onto their customers because they fear they are losing more customers because of it—what about this news?

As always your thoughts and comments are welcomed and appreciated. Have any problems, questions, concerns, or just something you want to bitch about…email me (shanu@gulianis.com) and I’d be happy to post it and get other retailers opinions on what they think or how they would handle the situation.
