What Happens at the Centurion Jewelry Show …
January 31, 2007
We have been busy here in the desert. Here’s a snapshot of yesterday’s happenings:
* Elizabeth Ross dished on a date gone horribly, horribly wrong;
* Cathy Calhoun got friends up to speed on some industry dirt;
* Hedda Schupak learned a new vocabulary word;
* Amy Levy donated $5,000 worth of PR work to the Jewelers for Children;
* A mystery man on the dance floor needed a belt; and
* Mark Smelzer held his ground with D-lister Kathy Griffin.
The last item needs explaining. After comedienne Kathy Griffin performed last night, she assisted with the live Jewelers for Children charity fundraiser. With a microphone in hand, Griffin walked from table to table, pretty much putting people on the spot in an effort to obtain a $5,000 donation from each group. As she moved toward the back of the ballroom—where the JCKers and some other trade press were sitting—Mark and Hedda discussed leaving before she got to the table. [Hey—JCK can’t just drop five grand on an unplanned charitable donation, it’s not in the budget.]
Well, a table next to ours started shouting for Griffin to head to the back and obtain their donation. Surely, the generosity of this group was going to cost us. Sure enough, Griffin chatted briefly with our philanthropists at the next table and then made a beeline for Mark. Mark looked away.
Kathy G: “It looks like your avoiding me, sir. How are you going to come up with your $5,000?”
Mark: “Well … we donate lots of free advertising to JFC.”
Kathy G.: “Really? That’s great! So you’ll donate $5,000 worth of free ads?”
Mark [hesitant tone]: “Yeeessss …”
Satisfied with his response, Kathy G. moved on.
Mark Smelzer rose to the awkward Kathy G. cough-up-some-bucks challenge. Jewelry people who scurried out of the room before Kathy G. could get to them: we know who you are. Mark, you’re the man.
