Fancy Talk
November 10, 2006

I think we all agree that synthetic/lab-grown/man-made diamonds (I'm laying off the term "cultured") will be a formidable product if the growers ever start to truly market and mass-produce them. But I always roll my eyes when I see things like this, in a Gemesis press release:

" With the attention generated by major celebrities and Hollywood movies, consumer awareness and demand for fancy color diamonds has grown significantly. With such enduring interest, there should be little doubt why Gemesis concentrates its production on fancy color diamonds," states Clark McEwen, Gemesis COO.

Um .. It's hard to believe this is anything other than spin. The reason the lab-grown people concentrate their production on fancy-color diamonds is because it is un-economical to grow colorless stones. Plain and simple.

The market for colorless diamonds is huge. The market for fancy-colored diamonds is miniscule (but growing). Most consumers still don’t know that diamonds come in many colors. So when you’re trying to sell a fancy-colored synthetic, that’s TWO new products to introduce the consumers to.

To paraphrase the release, if Gemesis could mass-produce white diamonds, “there should be little doubt” they would jump into it in a second.

Ahhh. But I disagree. COloured diamonmd are no longer affordable BY ANYONE unless they are drekky looking So if lab growns can make attractyive coloured diamonds at an affordable price, they have a ready market.

I agree with Rob. Everyone and their brother would be manufacturing synthetic diamonds if they could make colorless gem quality synthetics for cheap. Apollo has a head start on everyone, but that process (CVD), while it may sound easy compared to HPHT, isn't cheap. And besides, I don't believe the colorless synthetic manufacturers are really in this business to make jewelry. They're in it to make computer chips. The first one to make the diamond chip wins! As for the colored synthetic diamond manufacturers, they have a very nice product that will be used for fashion jewelry. But there isn't a wealthy movie star or corporate CEO who will buy a synthetic when they can afford one made by Mother Nature. Take a lesson from synthetics: emerald, ruby, sapphire, padparadscha, and spinel... They all look terrific, but they are not replacing mother nature's stones when one can afford the real thing. And do you really think that if someone really wanted a colored diamond - and couldn't afford it - that they would choose to buy a synthetic? I have a feeling that those people will be looking to buy other natural stones before going the synthetic route. Nothing against sythetic diamonds, but I think, just like CZ purchases, the person who chooses to buy synthetic diamond jewelry is looking for the look, the fashion, and the price. They're not looking for the real thing first and then deciding affordability is the overriding factor to choose a synthetic.
