GIA in New Jersey?
November 7, 2006
Oh please! I wish I had a dime for every time I heard the GIA laboratory was moving from Manhattan. Right. OK - The GIA laboratory could use more staff, more room, and less personal contact with the trade. But reality here is that having stones delivered by courier and returned by courier adds more delay to an already delayed process. And the New York lab is the lifeblood of GIA's bottom line. Unless you see how a Newark lab could double its speed and accuracy to account for the transportation nightmare, I think not. They might as well double the size of Carlsbad (which they are) and ship stones from New York to California (which has been done before). The difference in shipping time would be hours, not days, and the "rent" in California is already paid for.
Now, if they're talking moving education out of the city, that's a horse of a different color. While I like having access to my friends that work there, move 'em out. I see absolutely no reason GIA has to have educational facilities in the city. They moved them out of Downtown L.A., and they can do the same thing here in New York. They won't lose any revenue, and they could move close enough to have the obligatory field trips into the City for their students.
