Live from Governador Valadares
June 25, 2008

The first day at the Brazil Gem Show is over and I was not disappointed. We’ve seen everything expected, including tourmalines, beryls, quartzes, garnets, emeralds, and opals.

One half-expected surprise, if I can say that, was to see Mozambique tourmalines labeled Paraiba* . I have spoken to a few suppliers here about the nomenclature issue and they are quite torn between willing to follow what has already been accepted by many, and promoting Mozambique as its own important locality. I will offer up a full report on that issue when I get back.

Met the Mayor of Governador Valadares, José Bonifácio Mourão, who had just opened the fair with a very enthusiastic and passionate speech. (No, I don’t speak Portuguese, but I caught enough with what Spanish I know to interpret.)

Beryls. (Manoel Bernardes.)

Irradiated Quartzes. (R.M. Gemas)

Natural color aquamarine... (SEDI-serras diamantadas e rebolos)

Imperial Topazes. (Manoel Bernardes)

More sights. (Setting up... Minerals and rough crystals)

OK -

Tomorrow we’re off to the mines, and back again for an afternoon of more Gem Show. Jewelry fashion show tomorrow night. I’ll tell you all about it.

Thanks for tuning in. I’ll see you again here tomorrow
