Culture Watch: Another Moment of Fame for Warhol
November 27, 2006

From a much-anticipated film to a new PBS documentary to the holiday windows of that New York barometer of hip: Barneys, we are suddenly bombarded by all things Andy Warhol.

What does this mean in the grand scheme of style? Well, given that Warhol is associated with Pop Art and was a bastion of 1960s and 1970s New York nightlife, we can expect those influences to at least blip on the fashion radar. We are actually already seeing hints of the 1960s and 1970s in popular fashion—from hippie boots to tunics.

And, given the number of cultural indicators pointing toward Warhol, I fully expect the upcoming “Factory Girl” (the story of Warhol muse Edie Sedgwick) to help drive this era and its art into an important trend. Through this much-anticipated film, Sedgwick--with her signature short hair and smoky eyes--and Warhol could well influence fashion and style throughout 2007. Happily, Sedgwick favored accessories, especially oversized earrings (the likes of which we’ve already been seeing around Hollywood). Layers of beads or chains, and hoop or long beaded earrings were among the looks Sedgwick often sported.

Speaking of jewelry, we’ll be seeing early next year not just the influence of the era, but the direct influence of Warhol’s work on jewelry. Robert Lee Morris will be contributing to this Warhol-mania when he releases a line of jewelry inspired by the late artist and Morris friend. “It is about bringing a new kind of life to [Warhol’s] iconic images,” he says, “and merging them into my signature graphic language.”

We’ll have to wait until at least late December (the expected release date for Factory Girl), and even later for the launch of Morris’s jewelry, to see just how much fame Warhol will enjoy this time around. But judging by the interest in just Barneys Warhol-iday windows in New York this season? It will certainly be a long 15 minutes.

Insiders that the JCK Style editors are, Barney's Warhol-influenced holiday windows were no surprise to our team. That's because creative director, Simon Doonan, told us in a fall interview about the retailer's plans for its holiday window displays. Read our chat with him in the Fall 2006 issue of JCK Style.
