Tucson Gem Shows: Cuckoo for Cocoa Pearls
February 7, 2008

I spent my first day of the American Gem Trade Association’s GemFair Tucson 2008 at the AGTA show. Most noticeable was the variety of brown pearls. Here’s a sampling of some of that merchandise.

AGTA 517: Mastoloni Pearls, New York; (212) 757-7278; www.mastoloni.com.

Natural-color Tahitian pearls from Mastolini have a delicious brown hue. They range in size from 8 mm – 10 mm and cost $100 per pearl.

AGTA 828: Shogun Pearl, White Plains, NY; (914) 640-2800; www.shogunpearl.com.

Round Chinese freshwater chocolate pearls range in size from 6.5 mm – 12 mm and cost $35-$150 per strand. The color is not natural.

Strands of Chinese freshwater chocolate keshi pearls range in size from 9 mm – 13 mm and cost $50-$100 per strand. The color is not natural.

AGTA 1600: Eliko Pearl, New York; (800) 538-0017; www.elikopearl.com

Strands of chocolate South Sea and Tahitian pearls are treated. They range in size from 7 mm – 15 mm and cost $1,000-$6,500.
