Rhinoceros Plug-In Options

October 20, 2008 .

Last week Victor Soto placed a comment here asking about the CAD program RhinoGold and how other CAD programs like this might compare with Gemvision Matrix for jewelry design.

The most influential CAD program for jewelry to date has been Rhinoceros by McNeel and Associates in Seattle..
.

Bob McNeel and his group of talented developers launched Rhinoceros in 2000 as an open source software program that could be customized by anyone for their own specific use. The Rhinoceros CAD engine, based on NURBS ( Non Uniform Rational B-Splines ), has been the building block foundation for jewelry specific software like Gemvsion Matrix, TDM Solutions RhinoGold, RhinoJewel, and Solutech3D to name just a few. If you are a die-hard techno geek and had plenty of time to devote, you too could make your own custom software using Rhinoceros as your basis.

All of these Rhinoceros jewelry plug-in programs can help you design jewelry. It is more a question of how much financial investment you are willing to make and how much time you will spend learning how the software works. RhinoGold and RhinoJewel are both very reasonably priced but certainly lack the depth of features and support you might find in Matrix. In short, you get what you pay for.

My rule of thumb when evaluating software is to first try the training and tutorials to see if you can understand and feel comfortable with the user interface. Also make sure you are buying features for the future use as well as today’s needs. The real cost of software is not the price you pay for the license today but, in how much of your valuable time you will need to become productive and how versatile the tool will be in the years to come.

I am considering purchasing Matrix. Roughly how much time must you devote to learning the software? Is it fairly reasonable to say one could learn it within one to two months, with training by Gemvision?

Christopher ... After taking the class you will have learned enough to make jewelry.. After 3-6 months you will be able to make it easier,

if you dedicate your time to practice

How do you think the learning time of Rhinoceros would compare with Matrix?
Also, I have been wondering how people deal with the training and practice time of employees, who want to learn it? Do you let them practice on company time?

Wren,

There is no doubt that the learning time is MUCH shorter with Matrix over Rhinoceros.... Matrix is very "jewelry specific" and well organized with the jargon and terms we jewelers use. It of course comes at a cost.... As for training time and practice at work..... I think that you need to foster skills in the workplace to keep good people. If you don't support your staff in this type of endeavor ...you will loose them in the end....

i just went to Italy to learn with Giuseppe Massoni, the main jewelry guy, Rhino is really hard to learn but worth it once you get it and if you have a good teacher... the good thing about it is that you can also use it for industrial design as well as a host of other fields...and Rhino is more versatile and accepted worldwide, vs. Matrix
