Golden Globe Style

By Carrie Soucy, Senior Editor -- JCK-Jewelers Circular Keystone, 4/1/2004

As usual, Golden Globe fashion this year was dominated by diamond jewelry, though the trends were slightly different from those of the past few years. For one, it seems the chandelier moment has passed: Stars still are choosing draping, dropping, and daring designs, but in sleeker and fringier styles. At the other end of the earring spectrum, there was a decided taste for diamond studs, primarily in Hollywood blockbuster sizes and interesting cuts.

The first round of high-profile awards since the last DTC marketing campaign began proved that celebrities, at least, are raising their hands (right, of course) in favor of the right-hand ring push.

Though hardly in the category of diamonds, colored gemstones made a strong showing at the Globes—a departure from past years' all-white flash and a vote of confidence for fashion's flirtation with color.

Among the highlights of the awards fashion:

Presenter and newly engaged actress Brittany Murphy wore Harry Winston's platinum and diamond earrings as well as a platinum and green moonstone bracelet with cat's-eye and diamonds. Nominee Jamie Lee Curtis (Freaky Friday) sparkled in a platinum and diamond "coral" necklace and a green tourmaline and diamond "thorn" ring by West Coast designer Cathy Waterman. Actress Jennifer Garner (Alias) wore Waterman's platinum, kunzite, and diamond "thorn" earrings, and three platinum and diamond rings with semiprecious accents. Presenter Marg Helgenberger (CSI) selected a diamond and Burmese ruby "underwater" necklace, "swirl thorn" earrings, and four diamond and ruby bracelets.

Jewelry designer Neil Lane dressed Golden Globe winner Charlize Theron (Monster) in a stack of Lane's platinum and diamond bracelets and a platinum and diamond pinky ring with onyx, while Jennifer Garner (Alias) wore platinum and diamond cuff bracelets. Actress and nominee Debra Messing (Will & Grace) chose Lane's platinum and cushion-cut diamond stud earrings and ring. And let's hear it for the boys: Jim Carrey donned Lane's platinum and diamond cufflinks.

Presenter Nancy O'Dell (Access Hollywood) made her Pamela Dennis gown pop with a long platinum and diamond briolette drop pendant and chain, a platinum and rose-cut diamond right-hand ring, and platinum and pear-shaped diamond chandelier earrings by designer Stephen Russell. Harry Winston provided Golden Globe nominee Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City) with platinum and diamond cluster earrings and stackable bracelets. Presenter Melanie Griffith selected Winston's signature platinum and diamond stiletto earrings with brilliant-cut diamond drops.

Jennifer Aniston (Friends) was outfitted in platinum and diamond drop earrings with emerald-cut diamonds hanging horizontally and a stack of platinum and diamond line bracelets from Martin Katz. Actress Patricia Clarkson (Six Feet Under) also selected Katz's platinum and diamond drop earrings along with a platinum and diamond line bracelet with fancy-shape diamonds. Nominee Bonnie Hunt (Life with Bonnie) sparkled in Katz's platinum and diamond "bubble" drop earrings and a platinum and diamond cuff bracelet.

Uma Thurman was one star who went for pearls, wearing Fred Leighton's platinum, diamond, and pearl tassel earrings that featured diamond briolettes. Presenter and singer Gwen Stefani (No Doubt) added color with Leighton's 1930s platinum, diamond, and ruby orchid cuff bracelet, a 1920s platinum, pearl, and diamond hair clip, and a platinum and pink diamond ring.

Actress Emily Procter (CSI Miami, The West Wing) wore a very special brooch on her hip—designer Samuel Getz's platinum snowflake brooch, the winner of Platinum Guild International and AGTA's "Spectrum Award" in the "Platinum Honors" category. Aisha Tyler (Friends) chose platinum and diamond stud earrings that looked like flowers by designer Erica Courtney.
