Politics as (Un)usual

By Carrie Soucy, Senior Editor -- JCK-Jewelers Circular Keystone, 7/1/2003

In the 1960s, war protestors made statements through fashion, but the passage of 40 years has certainly made an impact on that concept. Rather than taking to the streets in tie-dye and Birkenstocks, the current generation of doves chooses a more precious way to protest for peace. One of the hottest fashion statements of the spring season was the peace symbol—or variations thereof.

After the Academy Awards, for example, it was Henry Dunay's dove pin—rather than Harry Winston's dripping diamonds—that had celebrities (and celebrity watchers) in a frenzy.

Sensing an opportunity, other companies quickly launched collections of politically significant precious jewelry. Perhaps the most visible was the "Love, Peace, Hope" collection by New York's Udi Behr. The designer, a resident of downtown Manhattan, was inspired by the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks in New York City. The collection hit the market, however, just prior to the U.S. invasion of Iraq in March. The 18k gold and diamond collection includes necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings with peace sign, heart, and ribbon motifs. Produced by OroAlexander, the pieces retail for $490 to $4,300.
