AGS Makes Two Appointments

Staff -- JCK-Jewelers Circular Keystone, 8/1/2002

The American Gem Society (AGS) has named Diane Flora director of education and promoted Gwen Carrington to director of marketing and communications.

Flora will plan, direct, and coordinate the educational programs of AGS. Most recently, she served as an instructor of extension education for the Gemological Institute of America, where she presented courses in diamond grading, gem identification, and colored stone grading. She also developed and presented courses in pearl grading, synthetic diamonds, and synthetic and treated gems. She has developed extensive seminar materials that include slide and video presentations and printed resources. In addition, Flora has been a presenter at the AGS International Conclaves for the past five years.

Flora's experience in the jewelry industry includes positions in retail sales and management. She was the co-owner of two AGS member retail jewelry stores, Flora Jewelers in Decatur, Ill., and Alderson Flora Jewelers in San Diego. During her tenures, she obtained her Registered Jeweler, Certified Gemologist, and Certified Gemologist Appraiser titles. Previously, she had obtained her Graduate Gemologist degree from GIA.

"The AGS could not have found a better match to fill the needs of our education department," said Ruth Batson, AGS interim-executive director and CEO. "I am confident that Diane's skills and experience will lead the AGS toward providing a higher level of educational offerings."

Carrington previously held the position of communications manager with AGS. In her new position, she will be responsible for marketing, strategic planning, media relations, and member communications.

Before coming to AGS, Carrington served as marketing and communications director for VendingData Corp., a supplier of products and services for the worldwide gaming industry. Carrington also has served as marketing and communications specialist for the Leukemia Society of America and has held positions in the television industry, where she produced numerous award-winning projects.

"Gwen brings a collection of skills and experience which will enable us to improve on several key marketing programs and initiatives," Batson said. "She has a strong background as a successful and creative communicator, which will be a valuable asset to the AGS as we move forward in new directions."
