The American Society of Appraisers (ASA) offers the following classes on appraisal methodology:
- ALL215—Appraisal Report Writing: Prepares appraisers from all disciplines to write professional-quality appraisal reports. July 18-21: Manhattan Beach Marriott, Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Sept. 26-29: Renaissance Concourse Hotel, Atlanta; Dec. 5-8: Marriott Dallas Addison Quorum Galleria, Dallas.
- GJ205—Gems and Jewelry Appraisal Theory, Methods, and Application: Intense, concentrated study of GJ valuation theory and principles that includes the three approaches to valuing gems and jewelry. Aug 22-25: Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina, San Diego, Calif.; Sept. 12-15: Tysons Corner Marriott, Vienna, Va.
- GJ206—Gems and Jewelry Appraisal Techniques and Standards: Review of general valuation principles and approaches; USPAP update; insurance appraisal and basic insurance principles; qualitative analysis of gemstones and jewelry. Aug. 1-4: Hickory Ridge Conference Center, Lisle, Ill.
- Aug. 26-28, 2002, San Diego, Calif.: Day One—"The Forensic Detection of Antique Reproductions" by Gary Smith. Detect the likes of Turkish repro craftsmanship and Victorian repro-revival found in the style of the Etruscan, Roman, and Byzantine jeweler. "Appraisals, Efficiency and Profits, United Kingdom Style" by Neil Rose. Day Two—"The Rise or Demise of the Expert Appraiser" by Donald Palmieri; "Identifying Makers and Fakers of Mexican Jewelry" by Christie Romero; "The Future of Cut Grading of Diamonds" by AGA lab director Peter Yantzer. Day Three—"The Advanced Gemology Symposium" conducted at GIA's Carlsbad campus. The grand finale hands-on workshop, adapted specifically for ASA, features Dr. James Shigley.
