Lower Lead Content Limits for Children's Jewelry

New Standard Took Effect Friday

The Consumer Product Safety Commission lowered the amount of lead allowed in children's jewelry from 600 ppm to 300 ppm, along with several other changes to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.

The new federal lead limits for products, including jewelry, intended for children 12 and under took effect on Friday.

Makers and importers of children's precious metal jewelry (karat gold, sterling silver, platinum group metals and gemstones) are temporarily exempt from the law's testing and certification requirements, while the CPSC determines whether to permanently exempt those materials. 

Makers and importers of children's base-metal jewelry are not exempt from the new law and must conform to its requirements.
