Tolkowsky returns to GIA to speak on diamond 'Revolution and Evolution'

By JCK Online Staff -- JCK Online, 5/11/2004 2:00:00 AM

Accomplished master diamond cutter Gabi Tolkowsky will return to the Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad June 9, to present “Revolution and Evolution,” a lecture on diamond fashioning and nomenclature. This is on the heels of a presentation he made last year at GIA about the science and art of diamond cutting. Tolkowsky’s presentation will be the second in the 2004 GIA Museum lecture series, Gems and Jewelry Brought to Light.

Tolkowsky, who spent 20 of his 47 years of work in the diamond industry conducting research for De Beers, is famous for designing, cutting, and polishing some of the world’s most famous diamonds, including the D color flawless 273.85-ct. Centenary Diamond (1988-1991). It originated from a 599-ct. rough diamond. During the same period and with the same team, he also faceted and polished the world’s largest cut diamond–the fancy intense yellow brown 545.67-carat Golden Jubilee–from a 755-ct. rough.

“Diamonds are a fantastic subject,” said Tolkowsky. “Sharing with each other is the most important of all values within our craftsmanship and artistic know-how, and I’m looking forward to sharing once again with GIA students and the public.”

The presentation will be held 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The 2004 lecture series entry fee is $10 per lecture, and is open to the public on a space available basis. Seating is limited. Refreshments will be served. To RSVP for the upcoming lecture, or to add your name to the lecture series mailing list, call 800-421-7250, ext. 4169.
