AMR Celebrates Seven Years

By Gary Roskin, G.G., FGA, Senior Editor -- JCK Online, 10/1/2001 2:00:00 AM

The June 2001 issue marks the seventh anniversary of Auction Market Resource for Gems and Jewelry (AMR), the only publication with information regarding all major U.S. and international auctions. Each volume of AMR categorizes antique to modern jewelry items offered by type of piece and includes measurements, estimated weights, clarity and color grades of diamonds and colored gemstones, plus additional information and photographs. Presale estimates and hammer prices are given for every item of jewelry. Each piece has been inspected and evaluated by the publisher or by trained gemologist/appraiser associates.

The June 2001 anniversary issue features a special focus section on mourning jewelry. "Mourning Becomes Her," written by jewelry author and historian Elyse Zorn Karlin, explains how jewelry was used to express grief for the dead, a widespread custom in the 19th century. The article traces the history of mourning jewelry from the earlier "memento mori" to the late 19th century, when the style was so popular even those not in mourning wore it. It describes materials, techniques, and motifs and includes a comprehensive section on hair jewelry.

AMR is published twice a year, in June and December, and is available by annual subscription ($195 in the U.S. and Canada, $250 for international subscribers). Auction Market Resource, P.O. Box 7683, Rego Park, NY 11374; (718) 897-7305; fax (718) 997-9057; e-mail: 76766.614@compuserve.com.
