SNAG Exhibitions Wow Richmond

Staff -- JCK Online, 5/1/2001 2:00:00 AM

The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) 2001 conference, held at the Omni Hotel in Richmond, Va.'s historic Shockoe Slip, included a variety of jewelry and metals exhibitions in shops and galleries in the Fan, Shockoe Slip, and Carytown. The public exhibitions offered the people of Richmond an opportunity to view hundreds of pieces designed by some of the country's most creative metal artists.

"Tiaras Will Be Worn: An Exhibition" presented a juried exhibition of tiaras created in mixed media. It was sponsored by Velvet da Vinci, Sam Shaw Gallery, Thomas Mann Gallery, and the 2001 SNAG conference.

"Finely Tuned" was an invitational exhibition of works created in traditional materials used in untraditional ways. It was curated by Andy Cooperman.

"Other Voices" was a national invitational exhibition of mixed media works. It was curated by Robert Ebendorf.

"Aluminations" was an invitational exhibition of work by artists whose material of choice is aluminum. It was curated by Laura Marth.

"Zierat: International Contemporary Jewelry," organized by the Southwest School of Art in San Antonio, Texas, exhibited about 90 pieces by American and European artists and is scheduled to travel to Germany and the Netherlands. Local sponsors were Schwarzschild Jewelers and Hoover & Strong.

"Selections: VCU Alumni" was an invitational exhibition of work by alumni of the VCU School of the Arts. It was curated by Nancy Thompson.

"Millennium Metals 2001 Exhibition" was an international juried exhibition of mixed media work that challenges perceived limits of materials.

The SNAG National Student Juried Exhibition exhibited metal work by students from across the country.
