Gem Pricing Report

By Staff -- JCK Online, 9/1/2007 2:00:00 AM

The colored stone market has experienced a marked increase in activity during the late summer. Dealers are reporting sales of pink and blue sapphire, especially in smaller calibrated sizes. Also selling well are exotic agates and quartz gems. This area continues to be the strength of the designer and custom jewelry market. This is no surprise given that the current trend in colored stones is toward artistic design work. Finished jewelry is performing well for dealers, while demand in their loose departments has been soft. Business remains flat at the mid level of the market, but dealers report that the commercial goods market is steady. However, manufacturers remain uncertain about the strength of their season, which typically runs from September through early October. Stock orders from retailers have been weak the past couple of seasons as they have opted to rely heavily on memo goods.
