Stuller Inc. has temporarily suspended the sale of Swiss, London, and Sky Blue Topaz loose gems and jewelry, "due to recent developments regarding the importation and distribution of Irradiated gemstones," the Lafayette, La., company said on its Web site.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations require the initial importer of nuclear irradiated gems to be licensed by the NRC. "Currently, there does not appear to be any entity licensed by the NRC for the import, possession, or distribution of nuclear irradiated gemstones in the U.S.," the company said.
The company added that there have no allegations of health or safety issues related to the gemstones. It recommends that diffused or coated topaz can be substituted where appropriate, but these treatments must be disclosed.
Several industry organizations are working toward gaining a better understanding and solution to the issue. Stuller said it will also be involved in the process and will provide updates on its Web site.
