Fashion Crossover

While the likes of David Yurman, Scott Kay, and Henry Dunay may be instantly recognized superstars within the industry (and among designer-jewelry aficionados), they pale in comparison to their fashion designer counterparts. Recognizing both this lack of consumer consciousness and the fundamental link between fashion and fine jewelry, Oroarezzo, a Tuscany-based Italian jewelry group, sponsored this year's Oro d'Autore project.

The project, which brought together 30 leading international fashion designers and top Italian jewelry manufacturers, led to the creation of one-of-a-kind jewels with a fashion flair. The objective is to give jewelry design a fresh approach—fashion designers focus on design itself rather than manufacturing techniques. As a result, explains an Oroarezzo spokesperson, the project serves as a laboratory wherein different techniques and methods in jewelry design can be explored.

Though the event is now 15 years old, this year Oroarezzo staged a first-of-its-kind exhibition in Milan during that city's fashion week, then took the collection on the road. The Oro d'Autore collection was displayed for the U.S. industry during The JCK Show ~ Las Vegas, where Tuscany's Regional Minister, Tito Barbini, was on hand to promote the project.

The 30 pieces were crafted in 18k gold by Arezzo manufacturers. Among the highlights this year was a whimsical take on a gold charm bracelet, featuring paper charms, by Moschino; a lingerie-inspired lace and pearl necklace designed by La Perla; a charm necklace by Dolce & Gabbana; and an onyx and emerald combination by Giorgio Armani.
