Gleim the Jeweler Marks 75th Anniversary

By Staff -- JCK Online, 9/1/2006 2:00:00 AM

California State Senator Joe Simitian and Assemblyman Ira Rushkin introduced a member resolution congratulating Gleim the Jeweler, Palo Alto, Calif., on its 75th anniversary. The resolution described the store as “an institution to the community,” noted its “tradition of high-quality products” and “civic leadership,” and commended its “long history of community support.”

Frederick W. Gleim opened the first Gleim store in 1931 on the 200 block of University Avenue in Palo Alto. His son, Arthur, built the business and gained a national reputation in the industry by pioneering the development and promotion of professional standards, educational programs, and consumer protection.

Arthur Gleim became the only person ever to lead all three major national trade associations, serving as president of Jewelers of America, president of the American Gem Society, and chairman of the Gemological Institute of America. He recently won the Westover Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Jewelers Association and previously won the top national award from the American Gem Society, the Robert M. Shipley Award.

Arthur's daughter, Georgie, followed her father's footsteps by becoming president of the American Gem Society and winning the Shipley Award.

Gleim's currently operates stores in downtown Palo Alto, the Stanford Shopping Center, and downtown Los Altos.

To celebrate its historic 75th “Diamond” anniversary, Gleim's is holding a yearlong celebration featuring special shows and customer appreciation events.
