Trade Groups Petition FTC Over Platinum Name

By JCK Online Staff -- JCK Online, 10/1/2008 2:00:00 AM

Jewelry trade organizations filed a submission to the Federal Trade Commission arguing that the word platinum should not be used to describe an alloy that combines platinum with metals that aren't from the platinum group.

The groups—Jewelers Vigilance Committee, Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America, Jewelers of America, and American Gem Society—were responding to a call for comment on a proposed amendment to the FTC's Guides on platinum, which would allow jewelry marketers to use the term platinum (or an abbreviation) to describe products made with an alloy that includes metal not from the platinum group.
