Sex and the Emerald City

By Carrie Soucy, Senior Editor -- JCK Online, 9/1/2003 2:00:00 AM

On and off screen, Sarah Jessica Parker is perhaps the country's most-watched fashion maven. Thankfully for jewelers, she understands fine jewelry and wears it with ease, providing better publicity than the industry as a whole could purchase with its collective advertising budget.

This year—the final season for Sex and the City—Parker is putting a traditional favorite in the spotlight and giving emeralds the best spin they've had since their p.r. debacle over treatments several years ago. Carrie Bradshaw, Parker's character in HBO's Sex and the City, sports a traditionally styled drop necklace featuring a single river of diamonds ending in two pear-shaped emeralds. The piece, crafted by New York's Sol Rafael, not only is featured in the show but also appeared in all the post-premiere publicity this summer. Proof positive of celebrity power, retailers are already reporting increased interest in the precious green stones.
